NEWCASTLE DISEASE IN POULTRY.
Our know-how of issues on Poultry helps us in getting a better result if we implement them in our Poultry management.
We are talking about Newcastle Disease in Poultry which is a viral infection of domestic birds, ornamental and wild birds. It also affect birds of all ages, it is not age sensitive. Birds are usually infected through contact with respiratory droplets from infected birds or through ingestion of feed or water contaminated with feacal materials of infected birds. Local chickens are carriers of the infection so never tolerate local chickens near your poultry.
Signs usually seen include acute respiratory problems like coughing, sneezing, rales etc, nervous manifestations like torticolis I.e twisted neck, paralysis of wings and legs etc, diarrhoea, misshapened eggs, small sizes, bleached eggs, increase in cracks, at times egg production ceases outrightly and mortality. Severity of disease depends on the type of virus involved, susceptibility of the birds, immune status and age of birds. There are low pathogenic called the lenthogenic strains, medium pathogenic which is mesogenic strains and the highly pathogenic called velogenic strains and these are the most virulent with mortality as high as 100%.
This disease can wipe out the entire flock and unfortunately is endemic here in Nigeria. Also, because it's viral, it's not curable and is better prevented with good vaccination practice, biosecurity and good management. The best way to go about it is for your birds not to come down with it, as it takes the birds time to come out of the infection. Also, there is loss of money due to mortality, drop in egg production and reduction in rate of weight gain in broilers aside carcass condemnation due to haemorrhagic lesions in the muscle.
To prevent it in your flock, you need a great vaccination plan that will work for your location as the disease although endemic to Nigeria can be more severe in different locations across the country, the type of birds you intend raising etc determines the type of vaccination plan you need. There are different vaccines available against this disease, the live vaccines which include Lasota, Hitchner B1 types which are given orally but which immunity against disease is shorter than the oil based adjuvant vaccines with longer lasting immunity against the disease. Combination of the 2types must be used to get better result . For these reasons and more, you need the service of a good vet in your locality that will help you draft a vaccination plan that will serve you well. Other important way is the use of good disinfectants especially iodine and formalin based disinfectants to periodically wash the environment, drinking lines, equipments and even aerial spraying to reduce microbial load in the environment. Master these things, implement them and you are more likely to make a success of your poultry.
