Dermatitis is a common condition that has many causes and occurs in many forms. In dogs,it is caused mainly due to Ectoparasites living in the hair,skin or dog ears like fleas, ticks,lice,ears mites caused by Dermodex Canis, mange caused by Sarcoptes. They suck blood thus leads to anaemia, allergy and damaged skin may lead to deuteropathic inflammation and Pyoderma. It usually involves itchy,dry skin or a rash on swollen, reddened skin. It may cause the skin to blister, ooze,crust or flake off. E.g. Atopic dermatitis (eczema), dandruff and contact dermatitis.
Transmission
1. Ectoparasites inflected dams rapidly transmit to their puppies during nursing period.
2. Infected host to susceptible host.
3. From outdoor environment such as playing or sleeping areas.
Clinical signs
a. Dermodex canis is likely to reside on head and 4 limbs. Obvious sign is hair loss around eyes which appears like wearing-glass. In early infection, dermatitis starts locally and long after systematically with pus in case of no treatment.
b. Infected dogs show signs of excessive pruritis,self-scratching leading to skin injury, alopecia, reddened skin thickened with scales and dry. Yellow discharge and pus can be present due to secondary infection of staphylococcus deuteropathic
Treatment
• Use ivermectin 0.1%, 1ml/2.5-3kg bodyweight SC, once a week for 3consecutive weeks.
Warning: Breeds like Collie,Australian sheepdog, Bobtail, Shetland sheepdog and Long hair whippet are particularly sensitive to toxic effect of ivermectin.
• Thoroughly wet coat with water, apply pet shampoo. Keep for 5mins and clean with warm water. Apply once a week.
Warning: avoid direct contact with eyes.
• In case of Pyoderma intramuscular injection with LA 1ml/10kg bodyweight. Repeat after 48hrs.
Prevention:
• Use shampoo or soap designated for pets once a week to prevent skin disease and Ectoparasites.
• Use milk for pets to provide enough nutrition for healthy performance.
